Storage units can be a godsend

Storage units can be a godsend when you need extra room for things and don’t want to clutter your home, office or business. But they are by no means a one-size-fits-all solution! You need to plan.

Here are five tips to ensure that your storage unit in Toronto doesn’t become an unmitigated nightmare.

1. Choose the right size. Get a unit that’s too small and you’ll be cursing yourself every time you have to empty your unit to access one solitary item… choose one that’s too big and you’ll be paying for empty space. For example, a 1.5 X 3 m unit holds the contents of a mid-sized bedroom or office, while a 3 X 6 m holds the contents of a typical five-bedroom house. If you’re not sure, err on the side of too big rather than too small.

2. Inventory and plan. Inventory all your items and label your boxes and storage bins on four sides and the top. Draw a plan of where your things are located in the unit and leave room for an aisle to facilitate access. Keep seasonal items near the door for easier access, and keep valuables hidden.

3. Packing your boxes. Choose three sizes of strong cardboard boxes or storage bins—small, medium and large. Uniform container sizes make it easier to make safe piles. Fill boxes to avoid them collapsing and try to keep weight under 13 kg. Place heavier boxes at the bottom of piles and make sure to tape boxes shut to help keep insects and moisture out.

4. Make the most of your space. To decrease the chance of water damage, keep your things off the floor by putting them on pallets. And this unequivocally applies to bedding and clothes—keep them off the floor! Also, avoid piling your things directly against the walls of the unit to avoid condensation issues. Disassemble your furniture but keep the pieces together and wrap fragile components in blankets to avoid damage. Pile long items vertically as much as possible and don’t forget to use the space in empty dresser drawers, fridges and freezers. Always protect furniture with blankets or cardboard when piling things on them to avoid scratches.

5. Health and safety first! Remove batteries from devices and toys, and drain gas and fluids from machinery and equipment. Make sure your appliances are clean and drained of all water, and keep their doors slightly ajar to avoid issues with mold. And don’t forget that flammables, perishables, food, paint and explosive materials are prohibited in self-storage units.
