Helping Your Dog to Acclimatize to a New Area After Moving

After moving, you and your family – and that, of course, includes your dog – will have to get used to living in another area. After the Toronto, ON moving company has unloaded all of your stuff and has left your driveway, your dog will have to make sense of its new surroundings. It will surely get used to the new normal soon enough, but there are some things you can do – and in some cases must do – to help your dog acclimatize to its new home.

Safe Space(s)

While your dog will be content wherever its human family members are located, that doesn’t mean that it won’t want some space at times. Assuming you have an indoor dog, find a nice place to place its doggy bed. Choose the place wisely so that you don’t have to keep switching things up. Your dog will know instinctively that that area is where it can retreat to if it wants to unwind. You’ll also want to select a place for its food and water bowls, and then let it know where they are. Doing these sorts of things will help your dog to develop a sense of normalcy.

Take a Walk…Indoors

Yes, it’s a good idea to explore your new home with your dog. Take your time since, as you’ve no doubt noticed, dogs experience the world with their noses. It will want to pause and to take in all of the new smells. Check out all the rooms on all levels of your home so that your dog gets a general sense of the layout. Another good reason for taking a tour of the indoors with your dog is that you can help it better differentiate between inside and outside…something that will come in useful when it comes to your dog doing its business when nature calls.

Explore the Outside

This one is related to the previous point – you want your dog to get used to being outdoors so that it knows where to do its business. In addition to exploring the exterior of your property, take your dog on a walk so that it can get to learn more about the neighborhood. You’ll likely be taking it for daily walks anyhow so getting to know the best places to take your dog for a walk will be useful. One tip is to check online to see if there are any doggy parks in or near the area that you might be interested in taking your dog to.

Find a Veterinarian

If you didn’t move far from where you lived before, then you probably don’t have to change your pet’s vet. But if you are in another town or province, for that matter, then you may have to seek out another service provider to keep your dog in good shape. Google is a good place to start. You can also follow that up by reading online reviews to see what other doggy parent’s think of specific veterinary practices or animal doctors in the area.

By following these steps, you can help your dog to acclimatize to your new home and area in no time. But before you reach that stage, you need to move, and that means you’ll require a moving company in Toronto, ON.
