Tips for Moving with Plants

If you plan to take plants with you during your move to a new house, condo, or apartment, you’ll need to shoulder the responsibility for getting them from point A to point B safely. Moving companies in Toronto, ON generally won’t load your plants onto the moving truck — and neither should you want them to since it can get really hot once the moving truck doors are shut and locked for the move. But the good news is that you can move your plants yourself by following a few easy steps. With that said, consider these tips to ensure that your plants survive the trip to your new residence.

Ensure They’re Packed Securely

When you pack the plants, the last thing you want is for them to fall over during the trip. That’s why it’s important that you pack them so that they’re all secure. You want them positioned in a way that ensures that what they’re packed in remains stationary.

Load Them Up Just Before Heading Out

As for when to load your plants up for the move, the answer is…as late as possible. In other words, it’s best to load them just before you head out towards your new home. Loading the plants too soon could prove injurious to your plants if the temperature in your vehicle is too hot. It’s also important to avoid putting them in the trunk. While you might be able to get away with placing them in the trunk for short trips if the weather is ideal, it’s best to keep them in the vehicle with you or in a utility trailer should you be traveling with one.

Protect Plants with Strategic Driving

Be mindful of the weather. If you’re traveling when it’s really hot outside, position the plants so that they do not encounter direct sunlight. You can also give them a break from time to time — assuming you have a long trip ahead of you — by taking breaks in shady places. You can also drive with the windows opened so that the plants are not subjected to humid air. If you’re moving during the cold weather season, keep your vehicle at a comfortable temperature since plants don’t tend to fare well when exposed to frigid temperatures.

Water

It’s best to wait until you arrive at your new place before you water the plants. If you’re doing a multi-day move, however, you’ll want to water based on the specific needs of the plants you have.
