Winterizing Tips After a Fall (or Winter) Move

As you prepare for a move, you’ll find that there are lots of things on your to-do list. You’ll make things a lot easier, though, if you hire the right Toronto, ON moving company. But after you move this fall or winter, unpack all your stuff, and settle in, you’ll need to do some things to prepare your home for the cold weather season. If you’re lucky, the previous owner will have already winterized the home. Chances are, however, that you’ll have to at least some of the work on your own. Here are some things you should do to winterize your home after you move.

Clean Out Gutters

It’s important that you clean out your gutters and downspouts. If they’re full of a leaves, dirt, and debris, the water will have no place to go when the snow melts or when there’s rain. It’s a good idea, after cleaning the gutters and downspouts, to install some mesh guards. These mesh guards will greatly reduce the accumulation of unwanted stuff in the gutters and downspouts.

Use Caulking and Weatherstripping

Do you feel drafts coming into the house around the edges of the windows? Assuming that the windows are still in good shape, you will be able to remedy the problem with some caulking and weatherstripping. These items are cheap, and are even available in some dollar stores. The good news is that just about any do-it-yourselfer will be able to take on this job. So you likely won’t have to get someone else to do it for you.

Shut-Off Valves

Do you have any faucets outside that can be used to water the lawn or to wash the car? You should find the shut-off valves and close them. Also don’t forget to remove any hoses that might have attached to the outdoor faucets and store the hoses in your garage or shed until the spring.

Service Your Furnace

You should also book a service call so that a technician can service your furnace. No one wants to experience a scenario where their furnace fails them during a cold snap during the winter. You can reduce the odds of this happening by getting it serviced so that it’s ready to work.

These are some of the things you should do to winterize your home. You might be able to get the homeowner you’re buying the home from to do some of the winterizing, but don’t bet on it. These are things that you might have to tackle on your own.
